Rick Owens Spring/Summer 09

Are they nuns? Is it a reference to ancient Egypt? A nod to (my favorite novel) The Handmaid's Tale? Are they druids? Does it even matter? Well, yes. He named the collection, "Priestesses of Longing" so it's fair to say that nature, lust, and religion were inspirational for him.

I was blown away by Rick Owens Spring/Summer 09 collection yesterday. I always think of him as being the king of furs and leathers but his minimalist approach for ready-to-wear has me swooning.

I think I would enjoy wearing such beautifully crafted hoods and wings and veils.

I think people look and see confusion but when broken down these pieces are actually very wearable. Look past the phenomenal but unrealistic runway styling and you see well made separates like trumpet leg pants, a-line coats, and bias cut dresses.

Rick Owens Spring/Summer 09

Nina Ricci Spring/Summer 09

Victorian-era romance reigned supreme on Olivier Theyskens Nina Ricci's Spring/Summer 09.
He kept it modern with an alluring sensuality running throughout with transparent tops and black stockings matched with nude colors.

<span class=

The silhouette was beautiful and Theyskens managed to make it look fresh with his use of colors and prints but the dresses did get repetitive especially towards the end of the collection.

It also raises the question as to where Olivier is planning on taking the house. While beautiful and well crafted have made many appearances on the Nina Ricci runway since he became head designer at Nina Ricci (and certainly he's been a positive influence on fragrances sales. Mommy Dearest even has a bottle of Nina Ricci perfume) but there hasn't been a consistent true aesthetic and this collection brought us no closer to finding one.

I don't know how commercially successful this will be but it certainly made for a beautiful show.

Prada Spring/Summer 09

At first I wasn't really sure what I thought of Prada's latest collection.
Whenever I see completely exposed abs I feel like its 2000 and everyone wants to be darling Britney.
And while she's on the comeback trail I don't think she's ever been Miuccia's muse.
<span class=
But once I got past the pop star thoughts I saw that it was a collection of minimal basics stripped down to their barest forms. These are meant to be layered and mixed. Pieces that can enhance something more extravagant or turn evening wear  into a look for the office.
<span class=
But it was also a shameless display of feminine sexuality lots of sultry bare skin barely covered by clothes just seconds away from slipping off. The models were tousled and dreamy women coming into their own.
<span class=
All in all as inspiring as we've come to expect from Miuccia Prada.

Bostonista pays attention to other people....sometimes...

Thursday mornings you can find me sitting in the Starbucks on Newbury St (the one in the middle across from Lush) from about 7:30 until 9:15 or so just people watching with my laptop and a menacing glare.
People are very determined when they walk into a Starbucks before work. You can almost see them rehearsing their orders while they wait in line, "Venti Costa Rica", "Skinny Vanilla latte, 1 shot mocha, two shots espresso", etc. etc. I like trying to guess what people will order. I'm usually wrong.
The thing about this Starbucks in the morning is that it perfectly shows the different type of Boston style. The bleary eyed Emerson student in pjs, the young business girls in ill-fitting suits and cheap bags, the older business women in impecabbly tailored suits with expensive bags. The girls who look casual in chucks but on closer inspection are wearing Alexander Wang jackets and carrying Marc Jacob bags. The over tanned college girls out for their morning runs in PINK short shorts and college sweatshirts somehow managing to run with their Tiffany bracelets dangling from one arm. And who puts on that much mascara to go for a run anyway?
Around 8:45 the shop girls start to appear in the latest jeans or eclectic skirts. Scarves are wrapped around in confusing ways, forever 21 is mixed with little pieces from exclusive boutiques and whatever the latest "It Bag" from whatever big name designer bought with some trade at Intermix. The sunglasses are extravagently large.

But I like the trophy wives that get up early to get coffee with their fellow trophy wives the best. They sit outside in their Northface vests and fleeces with baseball caps trying to look like anything but trophy wives. The perfect hair and too big diamond stud earrings give them away. They've got their True Religion jeans on and tuck their very real, very large LV totes under the table as if a $1400 bag was something to be neglected and tossed around. They're in no rush to get anywhere. If they have kids their home with the nanny. But they talk about what a full and busy day they have ahead of them. Doing what? Decorating the dining room again? Mani/Pedi? The great mystery of our time, I suppose.

It's like every little sect of the Back Bay has converged in this tiny, uncomfortable spot but are utterly unaware of the existence of the people next to them.

Me? I guess I look like a cross between a college student and a shop girl. Sitting alone with her laptop pretending to be so very Carrie Bradshaw like. And also about to have a major anxiety attack. Not a good feeling.

A Celebrity Moment: MK at Milan International Airport

How unbelievable is that coat? MK never fails to amaze me with her style when she's in Europe and her arrival at Milan International Airport this morning was no exception!
How can she looks so stunning and glamorous after a direct flight to Italy from LA?!
I get on a plane in my VS PINK yellow sweats scrunched up, with flip flops and a too big men's v-neck Hanes undershirt!
She truly dresses.
Can anyone ID that amazing coat?!

A Celebrity Moment:Eva Longoria in Marchesa

<span class=
Not even two weeks after the Marchesa SS 09 presentation in New York Eva Longoria wore one of the looks to tonights Emmy Awards. And basically completely ruined it. It's a hard dress for anyone to pull off and I give her props for even trying but man...not a good look.
Sorry Eva!

A Socialite Moment: Julia Restoin Roitfeld at The New Yorkers for Children Benefit

How is it that Julia Restoin Roitfeld can make even black NYLONS look chic?!
And why can't I be her?

I'm super flattered because the lovely Celeste at Audrey Monroe chose to interview me for her blog and for a profile for one of her classes!
She asked about blogging, Boston and, of course, fashion!
To read part of the interview go to Audrey Monroe!
Thank you so much, Celeste!

In other news the rumor going around is that Ashley Olsen has begun working on a menswear portion of The Row. I can't imagine too many boys wearing it but I can see their girlfriends scooping it up. Are you picturing lots of skinny tuxedo pants or is that just me?

Topshop was supposed to finally open it's long-awaited first US store this fall. In fact, I'm pretty sure the store was supposed to open in NYC during fashion week.
But according to Refinery29 and the Financial Times the store now won't be opening until Spring 2009. Considering this is at least the second time that they've pushed back the opening I'm starting to think it might never happen.

Temperley London SS 09

I know a lot of people really hated the Temperley show. Expectations ran high and maybe the end result was a bit of a let down. But there were a lot of pieces that I thought stood out.
I'm not a huge fan of women in tuxedos but I understand wanting to recreate the look. Thats why I think this tuxedo dress is the only way rock the style.

<span class=

The signature Temperley sweetness was mixed with a new layer of sophistication. This was Alice Temperley's first show back in London after several seasons in NYC seemed inspired by tea parties and life of luxury and leisure. Maybe thats why the collection hasn't gotten the warmest response? What works in a garden at Windsor doesn't always translate to the cold reality of Manhattan. There were times towards the end of the show that pieces were a bit too reminiscent of Erin Fetherston's recent disaster but for the most part these were pieces to be embraced and worn by girls who may be quiet but refuse to be wall flowers.

London Fashion Week: Luella SS 09

Be girlie, be pretty, be colorful, be a little over the top. Add some frilly pieces, lady like gloves, satin, and tulle in psychedelic colors somehow translated into chic and cool rather than grandma's closet. Luella hit the cheerful note that we desperately needed.

Boston Fashion Week

It's Boston fashion week  but it's also London fashion week.
You can find the event schedule for Boston here.
Tonight is the Stuff@Night after party at Cafeteria on Newbury St at 10 PM.
My awesome mentor, Erica Corsano, is super involved in the events and is writing a great blog for Stuff@Night to cover it!
Most of the presentations this week in Boston are presented by stores and magazines rather than a show by individual designers of their upcoming collections.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I was in a minor car accident on Thursday (forcing me to miss my first day at Dress) and was at the ER. It's really thrown me off balance. Even the TopShop show from London today couldn't cheer me up.

A Model Moment: Obviously better than McCain/Palin

These adorable political model pins are being passed out for free at the tents as ads for the upcoming Modelina website. How cute are they? Yet another reason I wish I was in New York this week. Although crashers probably don't get the freebies.
