Alexander Wang Spring Summer 2010

I have to say I'm really disappointed with the Alexander Wang collection. There are pieces that I loved but overall it was disappointing.

The idea at Alexander Wang seemed to be a country club/preppy girl deconstructing her clothing and turning to grunge. At times the idea worked--I really liked the skirt that ties in the front around the waist like a sweatshirt or flannel shirt-- but at other times it was too much of a literal interpretation that made the collection far too kitschy to really be taken seriously.

Then there was the completely out of place black cocktail dresses. I admire Wang for trying to branch out but I don't look to him for evening wear. At the same time it also felt like they were there as a "safety" net for the collection under the assumption that glittery black dresses always sell and always work on the red carpet. So maybe he wasn't branching out so much as trying to play it safe in a volatile economy.

Erin Wasson x RCVA SS 2010- or- The Most Useless Runway Show Ever. EVER.

I don't think I even have anything to say about this mess.
<span class=
<span class=
<span class=
Oh except Erin is apparently so over her rocker look and is a "hippie" now.
<span class=
Please go back to just being a model. And never make this face again. Please.

Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2010

I can't believe Jason Wu looked at model Ymre Stiekema in this formless, ill-fitting, peptobismal pink suit and thought, "YES! PERFECT! SEND HER DOWN THE RUNWAY!"
<span class=

Are those pocket pleats?! With a loose top? Believe me, women do not want pleated pockets- it makes our hips look huge and points out things most of us would like to keep hidden. And couldn't they have steamed those pants?

You'd think that his first collection since the First Lady turned him into a household name (his last showing was after the inauguration but so close in time that his collection was mostly done and didn't have a lot of room for change) would be show-stopping and not mostly boring.

The oddly set (mirrored runway, opulent room, velvet curtains...) runway show wasn't all bad. But it seemed as if Wu couldn't decide if his clients are dowdy twenty-somethings or desperate cougars. Of course everything was beautifully made in ultra-luxe fabrics. Still, even at the prettiest it felt more like Betsy Johnson's collection of prom dresses then a collection from a man who is supposed to be growing into the next Oscar de la Renta.

Here is a sample of the looks- a few that I love and some that made me very unhappy!
What do you think of Jason Wu's latest collection? Is it Michelle Obama worthy or did it fall flat?

If she wasn't 16 I might actually like it.

Vena Cava Spring/Summer 2010

With this collection Lisa Mayock and Sophie Buhai moved Vena Cava out of the after-hours Brooklyn club to the more glossy pre-party hour when "It" girls are perfecting their look and the night seems full of possibility.
There is more polish and more color (a splash of orange here and a bit of baby blue there) but subtle acid washing and safety-pin detailing helps the line grow into a fresher aesthetic without alienating their Brooklyn-dwelling fans.
I really loved the high sash banding that helped to define waists and the subtle tribal theme that seemed to run throughout the collection.
But my favorite part of the show was the matte purple lipstick on the models! It is actually flattering on most skin tones! I use a quick dab of purple lip gloss for day, layer it on heavier at night, and am always amazed by how fantastic it looks! You should give purple a try if you haven't already!

Jenni Kayne Spring/Summer 2010

Jenni Kayne is, in my opinion, the queen of the cool-girl-basic. Maybe it's because she's a cool girl herself but she always seems to know what the urban girl with effortless style wants to wear and what she needs to fill in the rest of her closet.
That said, there isn't a lot of originality here. The pictures from the presentation could easily be of girls you see on the sartorialist or on the classier of the American Apparel addicts. But I like it anyway!
There were some styling choices for the presentation that I didn't like (some of the shoes are horrendous and some looks are over layered so you can't see some pieces very well) but the individual pieces are beautiful separates!

BCBG MAX AZRIA SPRING/SUMMER 2010

If you asked Max Azria what his inspirations for this collection may have been he probably wouldn't say, "Balenciaga! Marios Schwab! Blumarine! Rodarte! Balmain!" But he should because their colors, shapes, prints, and style are all over the BCBG runway this season!
He may admit to copying his own designs for Herve Leger especially since the line has become a red carpet staple for young Hollywood starlets and thus lusted after by teenage girls everywhere!

Don't get me wrong...none of this is a bad thing! In fact, the combination is a very good thing for BCBG because it is exactly what I expect of a BCBG collection: pretty, sexy party dresses that are well made but heavily influenced by higher end collections. I can't afford Herve or Balenciaga but I can afford BCBG so this collection works for me!

Helmut Lang Spring/Summer 2010

It's the first review of the Spring/Summer 2010 season! Are you excited? I know I am!
We're starting with the always interesting Helmut Lang. The collection certainly fits into the overall aesthetic of the line but it didn't add anything new to the dialogue.
So what did I like?

Bostonista Shops!

I was poking around one of my favorite shopping sites, ModCloth, and saw this vintage inspired number! The Wesleyan Blouse in History Class is a little steep (for ModCloth) at $79.99 but it taps into the current Mad Men craze, and looks like it would have a great fit! I love the color and it is always great to have an interesting piece that no one else will have!
I might have to dip into my next paycheck!

Bandwith Exceeded

Hey darlings! Just some housekeeping...

You may have noticed that a lot of pictures are missing from nearly all of my posts!
For the first time in the five years that I've had a photobucket account I've exceeded my monthly bandwidth. I don't know how to explain this as I haven't uploaded the amount of media in this past week as I usually do in a month. The only explanation I can think of is that someone has been hotlinking my images. I don't tend to credit individual images (unless I'm specifically asked to)- other than the general credit/disclaimer sidebar on the right side of my blog- but I never, EVER hotlink images. It is rude and can be very expensive for the person who has uploaded them. I encourage you to take pictures from my site but please don't hotlink! Photobucket, flickr, and many other sites offer free memberships. Please download the image, and then upload it to your own account before placing the image on your own blog/at a message board/myspace/etc.

I'm not really sure how to correct the current problem. I deleted all of my .gifs, "icon" images, and ones I've never used but that hasn't made a difference. I guess any of the missing images won't reappear until October 1. Due to this I'm creating a new photobucket account (unless any of you amazing blogger girls know of a better, free service!) that all new images will be hosted at from now but please be patient with the older images!

Also, I received an email from Google today letting me know that it has been a year since I purchased my domain and I'll need to renew it. Should I stick with google (and therefore blogger) or should I make the switch to WordPress? Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks!

A Celebrity Moment: Victoria Beckham Covers Elle

The amazing Posh gets the cover of October's Elle magazine.
If you're going to put a non-model celebrity on the cover it should be someone like Victoria who lives and breathes fashion and has a strong sense of personal style.
Don't you agree?
